The possible end of a community tradition!
Hockessin 4th of July – After more than 25 years – this year’s community celebration may be the last. Kenny Wynn kept the fireworks from being canceled in 2006, and since then has been working each year to keep the tradition alive. He and his office assistant, along with a few other volunteers, work on raising funds through donations from individuals, businesses, civic leaders and community organizations. Last year Mr. Wynn announced that 2015 would be THE last year for him to direct the events. Another group was meant to take the reins this year, but collapsed, as did the plan to initiate a new chairperson. This year Mr. Wynn planned to walk the new committee through the necessary logistics and simply help in the future, but not run the entire event. As of today, only the morning neighborhood relay races have been successfully handed off to the Hockessin Athletic Club, youth program, who for the second year in a row are running that portion of the day’s activities. If no one steps up to chair the parade and fireworks events, Hockessin won’t be the place to celebrate Independence Day in 2017.
Thank you to our volunteers, local businesses, corporate, professional, civic and government partners who support the Hockessin 4th of July in so many ways, which helps us make this annual tradition a community celebration!
